Review: Chill and Dine with Saltwater Buffet

A scrumptious international spread awaits in this buffet restaurant near Singapore’s Changi Airport

Nestled in the sleepy yet lush little neighbourhood of Changi Village is Saltwater, another addition to the ever-growing Halal certified food places that aims to provide a greater dining experience to all their consumers. The restaurant is spacious and air-conditioned, featuring full height windows that bring in the natural light - Saltwater is proud to claim that it is one of the few buffet restaurants to have this feature.

With a menu that boasts a wide selection of international and local fare, Saltwater’s live barbeque station (available for dinners on Fridays to Sundays only) is the one that takes centre stage.The Grill Master is always on standby, ready to take orders of all-you-can-eat Meat Skewers, Chargrilled Chicken, Beef Ribs, King Prawns, Scallops or even Squid.

The main highlight? Tomahawk steaks that have been grilled so well that the meat melts as soon as it enters your mouth! Simply order at the grilling station and sit back while you wait for the done meats to be sent over to your dining table. A note to the wise -the queue for the grilled meats gets long so make sure you order as soon as you settle down!

Saltwater provides various sauces to accompany the grilled meats and seafood, ranging from Mexican Salsa, Lebanese Tahini Sauce, Thai Sweet Chilli, Brown Sauce, Puerto Rican Mojito Apricot BBQ, Mint Sauce andGarlic Aioli. For all you beef lovers, we highly recommend the Brown Sauce or the Puerto RicanApricot BBQas the sweetness of the two sauces balances well with the savouriness of the beef. More of a seafood person? Go with the Thai Sweet Chilli sauce - it never disappoints.

Diners can have fun at the DIY Rojak station, where they can control the number of ingredients they need. Want more youtiao (Chinese dough sticks)? Or maybe you prefer more crunchy turnip slices? No problem -it’s all up to you!

Western fares such as canapés (take your pick of the Vegetable tartlets or the Chicken with Spicy Mayo)and cheese platters(consisting of European cheeses, assorted dried fruits, nuts, crackersand fruit jams) are available, lending a much-welcomed variety for diners who might not necessarily have had the opportunity to savour such cuisines before.

And with Saltwater being a Halal certified restaurant, one can be assured that the cheeses do not contain animal-based rennet (or even if they do, the rennet comes from a Halal source).

Food from Singapore and the neighbouring regions also shine here as well. Take your pick from the Japanese section, where the tempura, soba and sushi selections reside. Or if you’re up for some local fare, there’s always the Steamed Barramundi or the Stingray with Assam Sauce to go with a bowl of steamed rice. Saltwater’s award-winning Nonya Laksa is also one of their signature dishes -the gravy is light yet flavourful, and you can customise the number of toppings to suit your taste.

Hankering for some dessert? Saltwater is also known for its homemade Nonya kuehs, ranging from the Bingka Ubi, Inti Pulut, Nagasari Jagung, to their signature Durian Pengat Shooters. Fusion desserts such as Pulut Hitam Cake are available on some days. For the kids, there’s also a DIY ice kachang station where you can have a hand at creating your very own shaved ice dessert!

If you need help operating the machine, the friendly staff is always around to lend a hand. Whether you’re a business traveller dropping by Singapore for a few days, a family holidaying in Singapore or a local looking for a place to hold a small gathering, Saltwater welcomes all. With a seating capacity of only 79, you’d do well to make a reservation over on Chope before all spots are taken up!
