  • 1 L water

  • 6 tea bags

  • 50 g brown sugar

  • 70 g sweet soy sauce

  • 15 g tamarind

  • 28 g salt

  • 30 g shallots, smashed

Telur Pindang (Indonesian Braised Tea Eggs)

Telur pindang, or better known as tea eggs is an inspired dish from the Tionghoa community - Indonesians of Chinese ancestry. The eggs are boiled in assorted herbs, imparting a distinctive taste and aroma. The appearance is also quite unique in that when the eggs are hard boiled, it is taken out of the pot, gently cracked, and set aside leaving a marble-like pattern on the egg.

Directions

  1. Boil the eggs

    • Boil eggs for 7 minutes, then gently crack and set aside.

  2. Making the tea egg

    • In a pot, add all the other ingredients and bring to a boil over high heat.

    • After it comes to a  boil, reduce the heat and add the boiled egg and cook for  45 minutes until the eggs turn blackish brown.

    • Once cooked, remove the Telur Pindang from the pot.

Plate and Serve!

  • Place the eggs on a serving plate or bowl.

  • Serve eggs with coconut milk rice or Nasi Liwet.
