Pisang Bakar Bugis (Bugis Grilled Banana)

Bugis Grilled Banana is a snack of the Bugis and Makassar people of South Sulawesi. Using pisang raja, considered the King of bananas with its unique taste, this Pisang Bakar Bugis is both a comfort food and a healthy snack. Commonly sold by vendors, some come with a sprinkling of cheese.

Directions

  1. Boil the bananas

    • Boil the bananas until they are cooked. Remove and set aside.

    Use bananas of choice.



  2. Flatten and grill the bananas

    • After the bananas are cooled, peel and press gently to flatten the banana, taking care not to squish or crumble it. Do the same with all the bananas.

    • Heat the grill. Once it’s hot, grease the bananas with butter, and grill both sides until they are golden brown. Remove and set aside.

  3. Make the brown sugar sauce

    • Add brown sugar and water into a saucepan and boil until the brown sugar dissolves and comes to a boil.

    • Add the cornstarch solution and stir until the sauce thickens. Set aside.

Plate and Serve!

  • Prepare a serving plate or bowl. Arrange the grilled bananas on the  plate, drizzle with brown sugar sauce and serve.

A sprinkling of grated cheese or chocolate can be added to the bananas before serving.
