Selangor International Expo (F&B) Closes with Record-Breaking Success

SIE (F&B) concluded in KLCC with incredible culinary displays from the region, exciting new partnerships and vibrant exchange of industry expertise

The highly-anticipated Selangor International Expo (F&B) 2022 returned to Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) between 6th to 9th October this year. Over 44,000 attendees from 60 countries were treated to dazzling culinary displays from the region, mouthwatering Masterclass demonstrations and heated culinary competitions.

With 472 booths featuring the region’s leading F&B innovations, equipment, food products and more,  SIE (F&B) was the biggest segment of the Selangor International Business Summit (SIBS), growing exponentially since its inception in 2015. The Supermarket Buyer’s Program alone – where exhibitors were onboarded with supermarkets – quadrupled in participation compared to the previous year. 

Some key highlights amid the non-stop food action seen during the SIE (F&B) were:

Selangor International Culinary Festival (SICF) Culinary Challenge

Teams raced against the clock to prepare not one, but 20 meticulously plated servings of Asian and modern dishes to win the prestigious Malaysia Catering Cup in this year’s competition. A panel of over 40 judges led by Chief Judge Chef Willment Leong, the Worldchefs Continental Director for Asia awarded points based on presentation, technicality, creative skills and kitchen setup.

The Kolej Komuniti Chenderoh Perak culinary team representing Qware was one of the star champions, sweeping up 2 golds and a first-runner up in the True Aussie Lamb’s Nasi Ambeng Catering, Potatoes USA’s Gourmet High Tea and Haco’s 3-course Western Style Catering Challenges respectively. PC Studio Café’s team also performed exceptionally well, clinching California Milk’s “To Go” Challenge gold by serving up the best 3-course meal consisting of starter, pizza and dessert. They also won the runner-up awards in Haco’s and Kikkoman’s challenges. 

In the individual category, pâtissier instructor Tan June Hong from TK’s Academy hard work paid off as he walked away with 2 gold medals and 2 Outstanding Chef awards for his cute cupcakes, and exquisite oriental Pastry Artistic Showpiece.

Gastronomic Master Classes

There’s nothing quite like taking in the aromas, taste and sight of local and fusion delights being recreated right in front of your eyes. Visitors attending the Gastronomic Master Classes received the finer points on whipping up favourites like Butter Chicken or Hokkien Mee from seven master chefs from Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Japan, Italy and India across the four days.

Chef Vivek from India walked attentive spectators through the steps to achieving a deliciously creamy Butter Chicken and fluffy Navratan Pulao accompaniment. Chef Dong showed the audience how to make use of locally sourced, succulent tiger prawns and to fry up a plate of aromatic wok-hei salted egg fried rice. Love potatoes? Celebrity Chef Sabri Hassan demonstrated how simple it was to make potato side dishes using Potatoes USA ingredients.

Live demonstrations were followed by mini giveaways and contests that visitors could participate in using social media.

Panel Discussions & Conferences

Throughout the four-day expo, experts and keynote speakers addressed challenges in the F&B industry, delved into growth hacks and shared insights into a variety of ingredients and food products in a multitude of panel discussions and conferences.

SIE’s (F&B) opening day featured a sharing session by Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) on how to benefit from its Export Promotion programme, followed by a financial solutions talk for F&B owners by Bank Islam. Retail distribution, supply chain risk management and agricultural produce export were among some of the other hot topics discussed.

Selangor International Coffee Week

Selangor International Coffee Week was held in conjunction with SIE (F&B), and it was a full-blown coffee lover’s affair with a showcase of different hand-brewing methods, tasting sessions, cooking with coffee demonstrations, bean sourcing and coffee brewing competitions. The Kopi Tarik challenge saw baristas battling it out pulling long streams of milk coffee while spinning around in front of captivated judges. Visitors were also treated to  creative coffee concoctions from The Malaysian Food and Beverage Executives Association - Professional Coffee Connoisseurs (MFBEA PCC), and individual demonstrations like Signature Pour Over Coffee from Haysao Coffee.

Several talk sessions were held in the same venue, where industry experts weighed in on how to be more inclusive in hiring staff and building a career in the café business for attending baristas and café owners.
