Matthias’ 8 Miracle Microwave Hacks

See your microwave in a whole new light with Matthias' eight easy cooking tips and more

If you want to make a meal fast, fuss-free and piping hot, some say there’s no kitchen appliance more perfect than the microwave. And here our AFN Foodie, Matthias, expertly shows you just how much of a miracle cooker it is – you’ll see how to cook rice, cook pasta, cook eggs, brownies, bake a buttery potato, and much much more. You might see your microwave in a whole new light.

1. Make a Mug Cake or Chocolately Brownie

In a mug, add cake or brownie mix with some egg, butter and milk and heat it up for two minutes in the microwave. Remove and add any toppings of your choice.

2. Bake a Soft Buttered Potato

With a whole potato, pierce holes all over the sides using a fork before popping it into the microwave. Microwave it for about 3½ minutes before turning it over. Microwave for another 3½ minutes and test if it’s soft. Take it out, cut in halfway through, add butter, salt and pepper or any way you want to season it.

3. Steam Vegetables and Season

Cut and prepare your vegetables. Put them all in a bowl and pour water 1/8 of the way up. Cover and heat it up for 2 minutes.

4. Poach an Egg 

Fill a mug ¾ with water and add a little bit of salt. Crack an egg inside the mug. Cover it and heat it in the microwave for 45 seconds. If it is not done in 45 seconds, reheat it for 10s longer at a time. Remove and let it dry out on a paper towel.

5. Whip Up an Instant Noodles Meal

Place dry instant noodles into a bowl and fill it with water based on desired amount of soup. Heat it for 2 minutes in the microwave, before adding the instant noodles seasonings, your poached egg, a little crabstick, and continue to heat it up for 20 more seconds.

6. Boil Pasta for a Quick Meal

Pour some pasta into a bowl and pour water until it is 1 inch higher than the pasta. Pop it into the microwave for 3 minutes longer than what is stated on the package. Strain it and mix it with whatever sauce you like and a little bit of olive oil.

7. Cook Some Fluffy Rice

Add rice into a bowl before adding the appropriate water to rice ratio. Heat on high for 10 minutes, followed by low for 15 more minutes. Fluff it and enjoy!

8. Scramble Eggs with Melty Cheese

Crack two eggs into a mug. Add your favorite cheese, some salt and pepper, and beat it well. Heat it in the microwave for 2 minutes and enjoy.

  • Revive Stale Chips

Stale chips? That’s because they have retained some of the humidity in the air. All you got to do is put them in the microwave for 20 seconds and they’ll be crispy again!

  • Easier Citrus Juicing

Place your citrus fruit in a bowl and heat for 20 seconds in the microwave. The membranes will soften and burst more easily. 

  • Easy Garlic Peeling

Heat garlic cloves for 20 seconds in the microwave, and the cloves will pop right out of the shells. Super easy.

  • Tear-Free Onion Cutting

No more tears when you cut onions with this hack! Heat up onions in the microwave for 45 seconds before you slice them. You’re welcome.
